Laboratory Professionals: Delivering Today's Results For A Healthier Tomorrow

April 20-26 is National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (NMLPW), honoring the 265,000 medical laboratory professionals and 14,500 board certified pathologists who save lives everyday by performing and interpreting medical laboratory tests.

As team members of one of the largest industries in the United States, the dedicated efforts of laboratory professionals often go unnoticed by the general public, as well as by the very institutions employing their services. With the public now demanding the assurance of quality health care and professional accountability, organizations representing practitioners of this critical science have a responsibility to ensure that the public is well informed about clinical laboratory competency.

NMLPW Objectives:

  • To recognize the vital contributions made to health care by those professionals engaged in clinical laboratory science.
  • To recognize the professional dedication of the practitioners of clinical laboratory science to the health care consumer.
  • To educate the public, government and private sectors about the key role played by the clinical laboratory professional to the health care consumer.
  • To enhance the image of clinical laboratory professionals in the public and private sectors.

The 69th Annual Educational Program and National Meeting was held in Orlando, Florida at the Disney  Resorts Hotel. Approximately 402 people attended this year making it the biggest event ever .  The welcome party was a success with a wide variety of delicious foods that tickled your taste buds. The souvenirs were beach slippers, a hat, and a flowered clip for your hair. The state baskets were beautifully displayed.  Our welcoming speaker was Mary  Feeley who informed us that we all suffer from HDD-Humor Deficit Disorder.  She had the audience laughing from the time she started until the end.  Another topic was how to transport infectious and biological substances effectively.  The proctoring committee met and discussed the protocol for test administration and said that computerized testing was taking place through Pierson Vue.  Dressing for Success was very interesting because it focused on the proper attire for job interviews and elaborated on the choice of colors and what they represented.  New topics in public health were discussed.  Hospice and End of Life Care was discussed in great depth asking what our five wishes would be before we die.  There was not a dry eye in the place during this lecture.  Last but not least was a detailed presentation on How to Run a State Society which focused on submitting reports in a timely fashion.  The week went so fast and ended with the Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede Dinner Show that was spectacular.  I had a marvelous time and look forward to attending the meeting in Providence, Rhode Island in July, 2008.
